Basically there are 2 men who singlehandedly affected the evolution. David Ogilvy and Leo Burnett.
David Ogilvy was the "Father of Advertising" and tested the limits of creativity and morality. If you live in Europe this is a big one for you. Europe has far more lax rules on the moral limits of advertising than the US does.
Leo Burnett was famous for the personalification of brands. He created Charlie the Tuna, the Jolly Green Giant, and Tony the Tiger just to name a few.
They both have books out that just reading those books from such great minds will give you how advertising evolved.
There are two schools of thought: Does the media affect the morals and attitudes of the population? Or does the ever-changing rules in society affect what is portrayed in the media?
I personally believe that the attitude of the general population influences the media. But that is the advertising "chicken or egg" question.

Modern advertising and marketing has its roots in Christian Evangelism. Basically it’s this: create a problem so you can sell a solution. This simple marketing principal is extremely efficient and generates results. But now the shoe is on the other foot, and the Christian churches are learning techniques from the major advertising groups.

Everything is tied to a product. You can't do anything anymore without thinking of some product tied to it. It's sickening really. It is much more prominent now than it was even 5 years ago. The more money a company or product has, the more they can advertise. Products are changing names on a constant basis because they have been bought out by a bigger company. It is very tough for the little guy to survive. Pity really.
