I'm not applying as independent seeing as how I am only 19, but other people have told me its possible to get all the loans under my name. Also I don't know whether or not I'll qualify for any grants or not, but either way I'd like whatever loans I get to be given directly to me because i really don't want to strain my parents anymore.

All loans you get from FAFSA will be under your name, unless they specifically say otherwise. For example, the Parent Plus loan is under your parents name. Regular stafford loans etc.. are under your name. You will be responsible for them once you graduate. I know this for sure.

If you want to verify this information go to or call the 1-800# of the college you are applying for and ask to speak to a financial aid counselor.

Ok go to: http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/
and fill out the forms for the financial aid ... that is the only way to see if you will qualify for grants. As a 19 yr old your parents income will be included with any you may have to determine eligiblity. As far as student loans my brother had loans in his name but as a Freshman you are limited to the amount you can borrow. Talk to the financial aid officer at the school you attend or will attend. They will be able to tell you what you need to know about loans!

Hope this helps,
Jennifer

Unless your parents signed the promissory note your financial aid office gave you to sign prior to disbursing the money....your parents have nothing to do with the loans. All the documents related to your financial aid are in your name....

The FAFSA is nothing but an application to ALL sources of financial aid and grants and it is all about you....just b/c your parents tax info is listed has nothing to do with the actual loan and who is responsible.
