My son was born while I was separated from his Dad. For excellent personal reasons, I did no put the Dad's name on the Birth Certificate. Still, he knows he is his son and the son knows he is his Dad.

Other than Child Pension Money, can someone tell me the advantages and disadvantages to have or not Dad on the Birth Certificate?

We have 2 sons. The oldest has his name and mine together. Our baby's middle name is Dad's family name, last name is only mine.

If you are both comfortable with this I see nothing wrong with it, the only downside I see is that If anything should happen to you though it might be tough for him to get custody of him if you have a relative that dislikes him other than that your son's know who their parent are and that is all that matters.

I am not sure there is a right or wrong answer here. From your question, I guess you were not married the the child's Father. One of the other answers mentioned that in case the father died, the child becomes the heir. That sounds like a decent reason but that is only a reason to have the name on the birth record. I guess its just up to you, you may want to call your son Target, in case many had a shot at being the Dad.

My son doesnt have a father listed on his BC because thats the way I wanted it..He is MINE.. all mine..But last year we did do a paternity test and of course he was named as the father..although he was ordered to pay child support he has not.. I never made a claim for child support didnt need it didnt want it from him.. Have not seen his father in 18 yrs.. Now my daughter her dads name was on the BC and good thing because it would have been a BIG mess when he was killed and as far as rightful heirs..She was his only surviving immediate family..so she was awarded it all.. Now had he not been on there then there would have been a BIG battle between his extended family and me..also in cases of insurance the child needs the fathers name on the BC.. Good Luck hope this helps.

Where do you live? That makes a difference in the answer, because the laws vary by country (and in the U.S. they vary by state too).

I can answer your question if you live U.S., but since you mention "Child Pension Money" (which I personally have never heard of), I'm thinking maybe you don't live in the U.S.
