I had a debate in my class today about women fighting in wars. The girl across from me started getting in my face saying women can do whatever they want to in the military. Being quick tempered, I responded with a myriad of reasons why she was stupid to even think that and responded with some info off the top of my head. I believe that women are allowed to go on certain patrols and become pilots but they are not allowed to be in direct engagement with the enemy.

Ex. A woman can be a nurse, but, she can't be a medic to a unit that will be engaging the enemy. If anyone knows where I can find more info or the exact laws that prohibit this that would be great.

Women are allowed to fight in the frontlines if their unit is the infantry but most of them are in the Medical and Logistics Units.

In normal wars, no, women cannot. However, in Iraq, there are no 'FRONT LINES.' Every area can turn into a combat experience where 'direct engagement with the enemy' is a normal occurrence. Our convoys are often attacked by 'insurgents' (aka the enemy) and women are also included in those convoys. Bases are attacked, and women are stationed there. Actually, women CAN do almost what ever they want except strike for infantry MOS's. There was a female F-14 pilot stationed on the USS Roosevelt CVN-71 in either late 2001 or early 2002 who bombed and shot the snot out of an Al Qaeda installation in Afghanistan.
Personally, I think with the experiences in Iraq, the role of the military woman will be changing greatly in the future.
I was just in Texas doing a job with some mine sweepers. The CO of one was a woman (USS PELICAN MHC-53 a coastal mine hunter. Cmdr Seth is her name. She is a lively, greatly respected by her crew, strong, petite, and very attractive lady.)
Israel is one country where the women are quite an adversary when it comes to combat. Been there, met some.
I've been stationed with some ladies who I would trust my life to in a combat situation.
Don't forget the women (two of the 17) killed in the terrorist attack of the USS COLE DDG-67 on 12 October, 2000

Women are not allowed to fight on the front lines... but the keyword there is fight. The problem is that their job titles may have them with a unit that is fighting on the front line and they find themselves under attack.

We are seeing this in Iraq now with many women being killed.

The fact that women can not actually fight on the front lines has been the subject of some recent debates... women in the military are complaining that unless you can get hardcore combat experience, you do not get the highest ranks.... Generals, etc...

I think ppl get confused on this issue because you do see female Green Berets and Airborne... but like I said, you can be in a unit and not have a duty that puts you with a bayonnet in your hand...

PS it was rude of you to call the girl stupid. This is a common misconception due to many women dieing in Iraq and women are in combat... just not the very front lines.

No, they cannot fight on the "front lines" as infantry. It's not discriminatory, it's actually for hygenic reasons. Lots of times a soldier has to stay outdoors in the same spot for a very long time. Females of course have our monthly cycles. Do the math. It's common sense.

She is wrong. Women are not allowed in direct combat jobs. However, if a woman is somewhere and is getting shot at, obviously they are going to fight back. But they are not intentionally put into combat.

If she thinks you are wrong tell her to call a Marine recruiter and tell them she wants to be infantry.

in the army, wemon are allowed in all branches of the army other then the branches of combat arms. These include armor, field artiliry, and infintry. These are men only areas of the army. There are a million reasons why wemon arent allowed, and u can research it on the internet, the main way to deter most SMART people is to say they are not allowed to branch ionto a combative arm of service

idk? why don't you ask Jessica Lynch?(sorry i don't recall her rank, and i hope i spelled it right.)
additional details:
sorry ladies. i meant no disrespect. i meant that they have no official duties on the front line. however, do you think Jessica got in trouble for fighting back. NO. she's a hero. she didn't get away, but you can bet your sweet *** she fought back!
so, did she fight on the front line?, she did not get tried(she's a hero!)therefore women ARE allowed to fight on the front line.
and again, i sincerly meant NO disrespect.

Women weren't even allowed on pirate ships. Was that because pirates were stupid?

The trick to fighting against a woman is to remember to lead your shots a little bit less.
