After two years on my dept. they are making a change to policy that will make me cover up my tats. Yes, they are visible. I would like to apoligize to my department now for my patriotism and serving in the military. I have stars on my elbows and a POW logo. Do any of you have to wear long sleeves in the summer? If so any tricks to get through the humid nights? Any ideas to avoid this! Give me ideas. The only idea I have left is to finish out with "fully inked arms" and smile.

I've worked for several departments, over the years, and now work for a private security/police force. The latter will not hire you if you have any visible tats. The only force that I've heard of with this policy was L.A. I'd suggest speaking with your union rep, as this is a change of working conditions. You may find that you can be "grandfathered in". Barring that you may have to change departments.

I don't have visible tattoos myself, but I simply can not understand the problem with it. With everyone making a big fuss over patriotism these days, I would think your department would be proud to show you off as a vetern. Your tats aren't offensive, but I digress. There are wonderful products that cover up tattoos really, really well. I posted a link for you below for theater makeup. It's not a perfect solution, but it might get you out of wearing long sleeve shirts in the heat or having to remove your art to continue being a cop. Good luck. Hope this helps.

distinctive police departments have distinctive regulations touching on tattoos. some police departments require that all and sundry tattoos be thoroughly lined by way of the uniform of the day. some departments require officers to positioned on short sleeve shirts. some departments would not hire you. some police departments enable officers to have seen tattoos in the event that they are not gang proper or offensive.

Yea, they say tattoos are "unprofessional". My dept wants us to cover up but i think a lot of the officers dont. Now, if they have tattoo sleeves then i think they cover up. i've seen officers with tattoos on their calves (bike team) and tattoos on forearms..

and if u do wear long sleeves....wear Under armor clothing! stay dry and drink lots n lots of water...or get those tropical/lite weight shirts that help u breathe..

I would find out about being grandfathered in...I have 7 tats but they are all on my upper arms, back and shoulders, I think it's a BS policy your department has, as long as they aren't racist or offensive (like a nude woman) I don't see what the big deal is...

Guess you have given thought to having them removed. That's all I can suggest.
