Yes, a general practitioner is another word for doctor. He will be more than happy to prescribe medication.

firstly I would say DON'T TAKE PILLS YOU BUY OFF SOMEONE AT SCHOOL it's irresponsible and unsafe. Secondly, I have just been prescribed some anti anxiety pills which are benzodiazepines (very similar to xanax.) this is written on the leaflet and I quote "diazepam tablets are used to treat a number of conditions including ... helping to relax nervous dental patients" "both adults and children can take diazepam tablets before an operation to help with relaxation and to cause sleepiness" your doctor should be able to prescribe you a small amount of tablets to take the night before, the morning of your canal and 2 hours before your canal. this is just a guide and always follow your doctors advice. also you will get (almost definitely and if you are unsure, you can specifically ask for) an anesthetic injection, and (you may have to ask for this) they can even give you a gel to rub on before the injection so you don't even really feel the needle make sure you tell the doctor and the dentist that this causes you a lot of anxiety, asking the dentist to talk you through each step of what they are doing may help as well.. once again, please don't try and buy tablets from someone AT school, it's not sensible. I really hope this helps, I have a real anxiety about the dentist and general anxiety too, so I know how you feel. let me know how it goes :) good luck!

A general practitioner can prescribe almost anything I think as long as you have a chart with them.

Yep... but not typically for a long time as Xanax is highly addictive. Most will expect you to find a psychiatrist if need is long term. Also, if anxiety is an issue (as opposed to sleep), oftentimes an SSRI or SNRI (Prozac, Zoloft, Effexor) is prescribed instead. G/Luck

Generally, they will prescribe Xanax or siminalr drugs but many of them are hesitant to do so because poeple abuse these medications so frequently. I know my doc will not prescribe Xanax, but he prescribes Ativan for me and it works well for me.

Yes, many do. If the G.P. does not feel comfortable with this, then he or she will probably want to refer you to a mental health therapist, but they can (if they wish) prescribe this.
