i'm highly considering joining the met police. i always want to help the community and protect people. but i dont know how to find out about it and who to talk to. what are their procedures, is there a level of medical you have to pass or fitness level.

is there anyone who is part of the force, what is it like, job wise, pay wise and satisfaction wise.

I'm just about to complete my degree and wish to join the force after, either part time or full time for a few years.

"I'm just about to complete my degree"
Presumably then you're an adult (over 18)

"but i dont know how to find out about it and who to talk to."
Would that comment inspire confidence in a police recruitment officer?Do you really think you're cut out to be a policeman?

The Met. recruit most of the year round, unlike the provincials. Check their website for info.

There is a recruitment procedure - written application, interview, physical test, medical, observation skills test, written tests of numeracy and literacy.

The tests are not that hard - the physical is the one most people fail on - if I remember rightly it's 6mins on the shuttle run test for men, 30 press ups in a minute and 30 sit ups in a minute - although I think many are going over to a push/pull test that requires you to be able to push and pull an average of 30kg over five or six attempts on a device that's like a cross between a chest press machine and a conccept 2 rower.

The pay's not bad, but the hours are crappy and there's a lot of paperwork and forced overtime - which plays havoc with the rest of your life. It's a good career, though with a decent pension, promotion opportunities and a job in which you can feel valued and that you're making a difference. It's also a job in which you are a target, you have to watch your back (and your mates' backs) and take certain personal risks.

Most places will allow you to go for a ride along if you contact them - you'll get to observe a shift or two with police officers on duty - and that will give you some idea how it is. Otherwise, you can try and join the special constabulary to see if you like it - but specials tend to get used for the boring stuff like scene guarding and officiating at community events, etc.

The only real way to see if it's for you is to give it a go.

This website would be really useful: http://www.policecouldyou.co.uk/

The salary really varies from force to force. But usually it starts at about 22,000 and raises by about 1,500 per year for 10 years. However, the met force have a great staring salary, its about 30,000 upon joining.

Your degree will help you get onto the promotional scheme what the police offer, which is always a plus.

There is a fitness test, which includes the bleep test. There is also a medical test, this includes them checking your eyesight etc, and a background check.

Good luck :)

Check your local police district website for salary information, it ranges from $35k/yr to $105k/yr depending on area (overall population income per capa).

If you are going to get your degree get it and then join, once you have your degree and after your probationary period after the academy you can test to a higher rank without any wait time (since the requirements are usually a degree (in anything)).

Most local web-sites will tell you exactly what is needed to pass the application process, it is usually in this order:

1. Application Entrance Exam (after you pass)
2. Orientation (give you your rank #)
3. Pre-Lim medical exam
4. Physical fitness test (bench press, 1.5 mile run, sit ups/etc)
5. Reading Test
6. Psych Test
7. Psych Eval w/ a certified psychologist
8. Getting into an academy class

Remember all these may diff depending on your state/local rules and procedures, but this is generally how they are throughout the US.

I'm not sure which police force you mean when you say "met". If you are in America, then you can check with the individual states and determine what qualifications, you need, and what the requirements are. If you are in another country, then speak with someone at your local station, and get his or her advice.

I am in the job. The Politicians are ruining it. DON'T join, use your degree to get a better job.

Go to the station and talk to them. You have to pass a series of tests, both scholastic and physical. Then you have to attend police academy for four years.
