When visiting a friend's house, in this case the opposite sex, for the first time what are some good things to know when I first enter? What do I do when meeting the mother? What do I do when they offer some food they had for dinner already. When and how do I tell them I should leave because I don't want to overstay my visit?

To add to what dog said.. follow up with a phone call or note saying thank you, a couple of days later.

One other thing, make sure to take some inexpensive flowers, not roses. Or take a small plant...

Oh, and make sure to stand when they stand up or stand up when they enter a room, pull out the chair...general mannerly things. If you eat a meal, offer to clear the table or help with cleanup in the kitchen.

If it is a nice house, mention it. Say hi Mrs. XXX, nice to meet you. If you are hungry eat the food, if not say you have eaten thanks. When you have stayed for about 1- 1 and 3/4 hours, say you have to leave/make a move and stand up to get moving. They won't stop you.
