When I give my hard dog bones or treats, he chews on them so fast that his gum starts to bleed, especially with the hard bones that they sell at the store. I have started to give him the milk bone biscuits instead, and his gums don't bleed with them. Is there a reason why his gum might be bleeding when he chews on those bones? Is it because he was chewing too hard, or could it mean there is a problem with his teeth?

If your dog is a puppy, he could be teething. Whatever his age, it's not a good thing for him to be eating that fast. In addition to bleeding, he may choke, especially on hard bones. He may have a dental problem that only a vet can diagnose (try a dental checkup). Also, try replacing a hard bone with something like a nylabone or a kong. It will satisfy his chewing desires, and not hurt his mouth.

How old is the dog? If he is young then he is chewing on the bone a little hard but thats ok. My dog did the same thing, we buy the nyla bones and he chews on it so much that his gums bleed. But he really chews on it down to a stub within a couple of weeks. If its not that I would suggest talking to a vet.

I have a boxer that does the same thing but she is 9 years old and her teeth are worn down with age but I don't feed her bones any more I feed her the soft t-bone dog snacks but it really is not safe for a dog to have human food bones you can usually get cured and flavored bones at your local feed store and all they can do is lick and bite it and not actually chew on it and that may cut down on the bleeding

Just like humans, gum bleeding is a sign of gum disease. You should stick to the softed bones and maybe even have your vet check the his mouth. Sometimes the hard bones can splinter depending on how the dog chews them and they can poke/cut the gums and make them bleed. If it continues to happen, I would stay away from the harder bones and let the vet check him out!

Depending on the age of your dog, there may be a very serious problem...

Puppies around the age of 3-4 months do loose their teeth, in which case they should be given soft, puppy-teething bones only.

If your dog is an adult, this is absolutely abnormal and may be a sign of Periodontal disease which occurs when an animal's teeth are not brushed daily and they do not have professional dental cleanings on their teeth by their vet. Yes, it sounds just like people!

Dogs and cats can get gingivitis, tarter build up, and just like us, if oral hygiene is not taken care of it can lead to major health problems such as pain, anorexia, tooth decay, tooth loss, septicemia, and eventually kidney, liver, and heart failure.

This is why pet dental care is so important. If your dog's mouth is bleeding, and he is not teething, please, please make an appointment immediately and have his teeth professionally cleaned. He may need some pulled, depending on the severity. please be aware that he will be put under anesthesia for the treatment. Believe me, this technique is very safe.

Please don't delay!

Your dog is most likely suffering from gum disease- have your vet check him out. The bones you are giving him may need to be changed- he might need a softer rawhide or something that would be easier on his mouth, especially if your vet determines that he has sensitive gums.

There could be something wrong with his gums, possibly diease or infection. Personally, if one of my dogs had bleeding from their gums, I would my an appointment with their vet. If left untreated, infection in the gums can lead to tooth decay and loss same as with humans.
