Well what is the normal way of ending a call? In the movies no one says goodbye, I was just wondering if this really happens.

I think it is important to say "bye" but I hate that part of a phone conversation. Sometimes it is so awkward, both parties both ramble on when they both want to say good bye.

Me: "Oh sorry I have to let you go (make up excuse here)."

Friend: "Yeah sure, I have to (make up excuse here)."

Me: "Thank you for calling it was good to hear from you."

Friend: "No problem it was nice talking to you. I'll call you in a couple of days."

Me: "Yeah that would be great."

Friend: "Okay cool."

Me: "Okay"

Friend: "Talk to you later?"

Me: "For sure."

Friend: "Take care."

Me: "You too."

Friend: "Bye."

Me: "Bye."

I hate going through that back and forth. Sometimes I would rather hang up but that would be rude.

I'm Canadian and I think all countries have some sort of ending to a phone call. Bye works, Chow, Later, well you get the picture. The movies are just that movies and made for your enjoyment. If no one says goodbye could be in the script. See Ya

Good question. I have always wondered how the other person would otherwise know the conversation was supposed to end. Without saying goodbye the other person would feel you hung up on them.

I think that they do it in movies and tv shows to look cool, like the people talking on the phone are on the same wave length.

Watch The OC and you see what I mean. They just will finish talking and flip the cell phone closed and somehow the person on the other end knows the conversation was supposed to end there, when in real life you would be thinking they hung up on me!

It is polite to say "goodbye". Some people have forgotten manners. I've notice that both young and old people have no manners at all. There is nothing wrong with saying "goodbye" that informs the other person this conversation is over.

I normally say bye or see u later. but sometimes my friend doesn't get what goodbye, see ya later, talk to you later, and gotta go, bye means so she understands that after i say all of those i am probably just gonna hang up. ( and no it is not an american thing they just do that in the movies to save their time)

You need to say goodbye around here, or people will usually get insulted.
One time? I'm gonna say your cell died.
All of the time?

Here are some American phone "goodbyes".
(Lots of cliches in movies are there to save time in a scene.)

'bye
see you later
bye-bye
later, dude
take it easy
see you

Most people say goodbye in some form or fashion.

I always say goodbye. Actually, if I'm talking to friends or family, I usually say "kILoveYouBye!" all in one word, for which I get teased.
