I'm training for the Chicago marathon and after a couple of weeks of running 5 miles three times a week I get pretty bad shin splints and have to stop training for a while to let them heal. Any exercises to prevent this from happening or other advice would be greatly appreciated.

I have two suggestions for you:
1- Check your shoes. Sometimes, shin splints are a combination of hard training (nothing wrong with that!) and old shoes (problem!). If you've had your shoes for 6 months or more, throw them out and get a new pair.
2- Run backwards. When you run, your calves are the only part of your lower leg that gets a good workout. You would need to strengthen the front of your calf in order to prevent the shin splints. You can do this easily by running backwards for about 2 minutes. It worked wonders for me.
Good luck w/ your marathon!

Stop Shin Splints Forever?

Yea, shin splints are a problem if youre an athlete. I like to play basketball and my shins ache so bad sometimes after playing I have to ice them down. I found that wrapping them with an ace bandage fairly tightly helped quite a bit. You could also try some pad in the shoes to lessen the shock. Also, a good stretch to do before you run is place your foot flat on the ground and bend your knees and lean forward stretching the calf muscle but keep your heal on the ground. Good luck.
