It is a mystery. Archaeological evidence suggests that 'homo sapiens' existed for some 200 million years, but they seem to have gone through a basic change in their abilities some 6000 years before they destroyed themselves completely. Scientists theorize that some sort of instability developed within their brains, causing a marked increase in both agressiveness and inventiveness, a deadly combination. Radiological evidence suggests that a number of 'atomic weapons' were released at the end, although it is unclear whether the political or religious structures of the time were responsible for this.
They are a sad reminder that life is precious, and cooperation between individuals and societies is of paramount importance in the final analysis. Hopefully, we will never find ourselves in their unfortunate position.

In light of the fact that the worlds worst murderers of all time are atheists, a major reason is atheism. Pol Pot, Mao and Stalin were all atheists who outlawed religion and went on to murder tens of millions of their own people. Has religion caused war and death? Yes. Atheists just do the killing alot better, especially when they come to power in a nation. Can't wait till we have our first atheist president.
