There really is no point to toothpaste, other than the fact that it contains fluoride to help strengthen the teeth against decay (and most cities already fluoridate their water supply, but if you drink well water or filtered water, then the fl. in the toothpaste is necessary)
The real thing that cleans your teeth is the brushing action of the toothbrush. Often I have pregnant patients that tell me they just can't stomach the taste of toothpaste because of morning sickness and are worried about how they will be able to clean their teeth. I recommend running the toothbrush under warm water to soften the nylon bristles then do a good, thorough job of brushing every single surface and FLOSS too (it reaches places your brush can't get too).
Of course, some folks are used to the minty fresh flavor of the paste, but I don't really have a preference myself. A clean mouth is all that matters.

Try going a day without brushing. You'll likely end up wiping your teeth off with a tissue. The brush and paste do a better job and fluoride helps protect your teeth against cavities.

Toothpaste use can promote good oral hygiene: it can aid in the removal of dental plaque and food from the teeth, it can aid in the elimination and/or masking of halitosis, and it can deliver active ingredients such as fluoride to prevent tooth and gums (Gingiva) disease.

YOU CAN BRUSH WITH CHICKEN SOUP IF YOU WANT TO.
WHAT REALLY MATTERS IS THE PHYSICAL PLAQUE REMOVAL BY THE BRUSH.
TOOTHPASTE DOES PROVIDE FLUORIDE AND A FRESH FEELING AFTER BRUSHING THOUGH.
