find a crash pad...you're really not in ny long enough to get an apartment or a lease
look for ads and have references
start with listings for people renting out (subletting) an apartment
also think outside the box...plenty of stuff in queens too...forest hills and kew gardens are filled with apartments and homes that will entertain renters not serious in staying...that's a big plus in the airline industry, and looking around those circles won't hurt you neither

Depends on what you call "affordble" in NYC. I am from the midwest (near Chicago area), and could not afford to live in NYC--the rents are just TOO high! (Not to mention the cost of owning/using/parking a car, if you have one!) Be advised that you will most likely end up with a very very tiny space for A LOT of money! If you have can, try finding a place outside the city that you can get to by train...but allow plenty of time to get where you want to go...
You may also want to ck w/the company you are doing your internship with--they should be able & willing to suggest a real estate company or neighborhood to look into...

Ever hear of Poughkeepsie? It's only 2 hours on the train. A one bedroom can be rented for about $750 a month near the train station.
On the other side of the river, in Orange Country, you could live in Middletown, a good 1 hour and 45 minutes from NYC for about $750, but not near the train station.
The end of that line, Port Jervis, NY, a good 2 hours and 15 minutes from NYC, you could get a one bedroom for more like $600 per month.
Any closer is going to cost more. Welcome to NY.

if it's an internship with your school, they can probably arrange inexpensive housing. otherwise, you could look for an apartment on craigslist. you could also look for a family willing to host you

Check out craigslist.com they will show apt. that are subletting or have rooms to rent out in their apt. or houses. Don't be too picky or u may be to disppointed cuz it will unlikely be in manhattan proper.
