All that follows is from answer:

One square foot, one inch thick = 144 cubic inches.

Another answerer is trying to blend the two numbers. They are not the same.

A 6' 2x4 is 6 linear feet, but 4 board feet
A 6' 4x12 is 6 linear feet, but 24 board feet.
At least if my math is right.

The correct answer is 6...

"board feet" is based on volume, but "linear feet" is simply the length of the board.
