how do i tell my parents though? We have animals and my mom was cooking chicken and I told her " Why don't we just fry up (parrot name) That's the same as eating chicken." She looked at me
and said good point but didn't say anything after that. We barely ever have food in our house when my mum gets any money she spends it on shoes and cigarettes instead of buying milk or something,
and that is because she barely eats and she thinks that if she doesn't want to eat, nobody should. My parents would rather save a dollar on buying fast food every day instead of buying groceries & when me and my
brother say we're hungry they tell us to go find something, even though there is nothing, and meanwhile they go and buy a bunch of crap for themselfs. I want to eat healthy and better but it's like they just won't allow it.
So what I'm asking is how to do I tell my mom I don't want to eat meat and that instead of buying hamburgers every day, to go to the store and buy some freaking groceries??

I have been a lifelong vegan and I can definitely say, "good for you!" for not wanting to eat meat. It will be hard, especially since your family is not making the change with you (my whole family was vegan and thats how they raised us) but it is not impossible.

Maybe you should start out by showing your parents that you have initiative to make your own food should they provide you the groceries. Showing them that buying groceries and making your own food is cheaper in the long run might be helpful as well. Judging from what you said, it sounds like this is going to be an uphill battle with your parents but I bet you can do it. Initiative is going to be the key!

Good luck!

Sounds like ya got the difficult mother like I do. Well, first off is youre old enough to work, you should work to get your own money for the food. Im sure shell bring up the issue of money. And if you go vegan, make sure you get your protein. There are health risks. Read into a bit more. And then bring it to your mothers attention that you would prefer not to eat meat, but dont be rude about it. Just tell her why. Dont argue about the parrot either. Just tell her you dont feel comfortable eating an animal. That should get you at least somewhere. If you cant go full vegan, then try staying away from pork and beef. That'll help you be a bit healthier. I only eat chicken, grilled, or fried in a natural vegetable oil.

Becoming a vegetarian is hard if you've been eating meat all your life. I tried to become one at 14yrs old and lasted a year before eating meat again. The thing is, that it more or less costs more to be a vegetarian because you need to be buying veggies and fruits - as well as tofu and things to replace the meat you aren't eating. Furthermore, not eating meat can have some adverse affects on your health because you lacking some vital nutrients and protein.
If you want to go the veggie route there are alternatives at fast food places - you can get salads and what not, but I don't know how nutritious that would be for you in the long run.

Yes becoming vegetarian can be hard as well as it depends on what kind of vegetarian you would like to be also it can become quite expensive having fresh veggies and tofu for 3 meals a day. Its hard especially when you dont have the power to buy what you would like so you will probly get stuck eating rice and potatoes and pasta till your on your own. Try and eat brown or wild rice this has more substance. You should read up on being a vegetarian and see the dif types there are and what products you would and wouldn't be able to eat its not an easy thing to do.

If you are having trouble getting food at home maybe you should talk to a counseler from school. They may be able to help you. You need to take care of that first. When they go to buy you hamburgers you can always ask for a veggie burger or just a bun with veggies on it. All fast food places have had that request before.

May I ask how old you are?

It sounds like you have two separate problems! Getting your mother to be a responsible parent is one problem, the other is becoming a vegetarian!

It appears from your post that you are wanting to become a vegetarian because of your mother! If you are going to become a vegetarian don't do it because your parents wont keep food in the house.

You may want to rethink the post and reword the question. I am not sure what you are wanting answered!

going vego is awesome. do it for the right reasons -watch a docco called McLibel- that might give you some decent ammo. you can be healthy eat meat and not contribute to the abuse of animals, expensive though -free range or organic meats are an option. vego meat substitutes are expensive too, but so is looking after yourself. talk to your parents, don't get angry at all, be calm (don't be a teen for a little while) respect them, ask questions, don't be a ****, see if you can talk them around.

I was a vegetarian for a year (I really missed spiral ham). The only hard part was eating healthy and getting enough protein. I get sick from nuts and beans but they are an excellent source of protein.
As for you Mom... Ask her for an allowance for food. Maybe you and your brother could do your own shopping, or maybe since she doesn't want to, you could offer to do it for her.
It's worth a shot.

oh my...well you should tell one of your friend's moms, they will help. Talk to a school consuler. Say, "Mom...why don't you stay home and relax? I will go out and get dinner for tonight." She will give you money, (if she is okay with it) and then buy healthy foods that are still good. Like a vegie burger, etc.
