Give a man fish, and he'll eat for a day. Teach a man to fish, and he can eat for life.

It means that you make the most impact in a person's life, or in a situation, if you teach them how to do something for them self, instead of always doing it for them.

You can apply this to many things, both personal, and social.

Here are a couple of examples:

If our temporary American imposed govt. in Iraq is successful, things will go well, and they will be safe while we are there. But unless we teach them how to run things for themselves, and allow strong leaders within the country to rise up, the govt will fail without us there.

You can also apply it to a parent doing everything for their child, and never letting them experience the consequences of their actions. Like always pulling their hand away from a hot stove, but never let them learn why you are doing it. As soon as you leave the room, the child will touch the stove and burn themselves.

Its really "You can give a man a fish and he can eat for a day, but you can teach a man to fish and he can eat for a lifetime." You may have to further explain the second part of the question. Like what exactly the essay is about.

give a man a fish and he'll eat for a day, teach a man to fish and he'll never go hungy again. basically it shows how education is better than a handout.

you can lead a horse to water but you cant make it drink. can be used in a similar context, basically meaning just because the opportunity exists doesn't nesessarilly mean someone will take it.

i can think of alot more, but it depends on what context you need to use them in

Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day.
Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.

Or, as I saw it on TV last night:
Give a man to fish and you feed him for a day.
Teach a man to fish and he'll bore the heck out of you on the fishing show for the rest of your life...

Or something like that...
