it is not a great idea to get tattooed or pierced while pregnant or breast feeding. because of the risk associated with both acts. there is always the possibility of some kind of infection and it would easily be passed on to your baby thru the milk. most doctors i am aware of would advise waiting.

First of all, why are you asking us if you are going to ask your doctor and go by what he says?

As a tattoo artist I would tell you no. A professional artist anywhere would tell you no. It has nothing to do with ink molecules being too big to pass into the blood - ink has nothing to do with it - also it does not depend on whether or not you are nursing exclusively or the baby is also eating other things.

It is about the fact that bloodborne pathogens (while remote) can and will cross into your blood stream if present and could (while remote) cross into breast milk. So that being that, we don't want that liability plain and simple.

Let's face it....if your baby (God forbid it ever would happen) ends up with hepatitis B for instance, who are you going to look to? No thanks - wait until you are finished.

I researched this alot prior to getting my tattoo through my dr., my daughter's pedi, and la leche...I don't know about piercing but you can re: tattoos if you go to a person that uses completely sterile means. The ink cells are too large to get into the milk ducts and therefore your baby will not be affected. You do need to make sure that the place you go to however is clean and sterile to avoid exposure to any other dangers. I would however wait until your baby's sole source of nourishment is not breastmilk...but that your baby is on solids as well...feel free to contact me if you have any questions...did ALOT of research on this stuff prior to getting my tattoo.

It depends on where, If it is in a place that will affect breast feeding hold off. Also research your tattoo artist and piercer, they should be using sterile equipment so you should be safe. the only hazard i can think of is ink poisoning.

Most tattoo artists will not work on you if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Just in case.

No. You can't. Mostly because if you got something, you could pass it on to your baby.
