I am considering moving to either Portland, Oregon for graduate school. I wonder if anyone has information on Lewis and Clark College, and what life is like in Portland as a young professional. What are the people like in Portland? Cultured? Is it a cultured city? Is it a happy city? A friendly one? A beautiful one? Any information on Portland and its happenings, from an insider, would be helpful, for someone who has never been there. Thanks!

Portland is a beautiful city. I've seen the Lewis and Clark College campus. It's very pretty. I don't know too much about the school.
Portland is a very cultured city. It's a great place for music. We have lots of cool concerts here. It's a great place for movies. We get them all, even the independent ones that most people haven't heard of. Plus there are tons of cheap theater pubs. If you're a beer drinker people are really into microbrews here, and wine. There are great restaurants (I went to culinary school here). Portland is home to forest park, the biggest park within city limits in the united states. There are lots of ourdoorsy people. You'll see a lot of people riding bikes around here. It's 90 minutes to the beach, and 90 minutes to the mountain, if you're a surfer or a snowboarder, or if you just like nature. This is a very green city. People really care about nature.
I know so many people that have moved out to this city and fell in love with it. We really love it here. I feel so lucky that I found the perfect city for me.

Downsides? Some people complain about the rain. I like the weather here. I doesn't get too cold in the winter or too hot in the summer. Well, if it does it doesn't last long.
Things shut down kind of early here. It's hard to get food late at night. That's probably my biggest complaint. There are a few late night things scattered about, though.

I could talk about how much I love portland all day, though.

I grew up in the Portland area and was there for 33 plus years and finally moved away a year ago. Its an ok city to me, but I just outgrew it and got tired of the long 9months of rain. Portland is a fairly small city so they only have an NBA team and no other type of major league sports team. To answer your question Lewis and Clark is a really good school and thats where Monica Lewinsky was going to school before she went of to Washington to work for Clinton.

I was recently in Portland for a job interview...and I hope I get the job after being there. I got a lot of answers on this very site saying how depressing it is. I honestly thought the people were very friendly and there seemed to be a lot to do. It seemed cultured and very green. The people there seemed outdoorsy and active, and had a lot of concern for the environment. I have no idea about the school...but it may be best for you to check out the city yourself. I was there for a couple days, and it wasn't enough time.

My boyfriend and I love in and we're moving there at the end of the year. There are so many things to do out there compared to NJ (which is ALL controlled by the casinos). The Chinese Gardens are lovely. Powell's Book Store is arguably the world's biggest independent book store. Within two hours, you can be at the ocean or in the mountains (both very scenic). The food is so good (and really affordable compared to NJ). The public transpotation is terriffic.
A one bedroom aprartment is about $500 across the board.
I know someone from Europe who says, "Portland is the most 'European' city in the US".

I moved here from Wisconsin 6 years ago. It's a great city - beautiful, green, creative. I'm thinking about moving to a different city though because it is a smaller city, it just doesn't have a very cosmopolitan feeling to it or any worldliness, and the job market isn't as good as other West Coast cities.

The rain isn't too bad, but it does lightly rain for about 9 months. I also want to mention I developed a severe allergic reaction to the trees here after being here for 3 years - my eyes became very puffy and red every winter. I have to control it with allergy medications every day now. Winters also drain your energy because your sunlight exposure is more infrequent, which is why there is so much coffee here.
