for safety reasons, so as you don't knock some one out as you leave.
you can't see if any one is walking past as you open the door.

I can't stand this. It almost makes me sick to see people walk out without washing their hands. I wash even if I just went in there to blow my nose or something. Public restrooms are so germy. There are problems with hitting people with the door no matter which way it opens. I've had to apologize to many a person I ran into with the door while trying to hurry into the potty! So really I'm with you in the idea that hygiene should be of highest importance when someone is designing a bathroom. But they never listen to us little people!

Some bathroom doors are equipped with "clean escape" handles, which are handles located on the bottom of the door that you can operate with your foot. Otherwise, if there are paper towels instead of dryers in the bathroom, you could use the paper towels as a barrier between you and the doorknob. If none of these options are available, you just have to suck it up and open the door with your hand. You'll be happy that the doors open inward if you ever have to barricade yourself in a bathroom to hide from ninjas.

If you think about it you are pushing the door open either way. When you pull something your fingers are really pushing towards you. Other than that I don't know. Maybe your on to something.

It would be cleaner..I agree to pull the door open and then push the door once you have washed your hands.

I never understood it as I see guys walk out without even glancing at the sink. I have to use a paper towel to open the door. Double doors are the worst!!!!

That's why I use my paper towel to open the door.
If there are no paper towels, I'll hold it until I get home.
People are disgusting. I've been known to comment to people if I see them try to walk out without washing their hands.

The door can only go one way. Most doors normally push out that i've seen anyway.

i like this question it's pretty interesting... here's my input... i think that you have to push when you go in because people are usually in a hurry to go pee; you can always take your time to get out=p.. It takes less energy to push a door than pull.. hehe they don't want you peeing on yourself=p
