Does anyone know anything about the Norwegian surname Kvall? My great grandmother was from there and I'm trying to find any family.

I found four spellings for the name and they seem to be a little interchangable since the same people are using both. KVAAL, KVALL, KVAALL, KVALE

As recently as 1997 there were petitions for naturalization for people with the spelling KVAAL and KVAALL filed in Minnesota. The huge number of people with this surname living in Minnesota is really pretty cool...they stayed together when they came over.

From the standpoint of finding out more about her, the best resource is Norwegian Heritage. Ancestry hasn't developed their Scandinavian resources very well. FamilySearch.org is good, but less so in that part of Europe. Try this link:

Also check out NAHA-the Norwegian American Historical Association. They have indexed records from both sides of the ocean that aren't in the mainstream genealogy sites and which should be very helpful to you.

Good luck on your search and let us know if we can help...

Hey Courtney,

There are 6 entries of ancestors on LDS Family Search. There is not a GENFORUM, sorry.

There are 12 listings for Kvall in the ZABASEARCH in the state of Minnesota, where most of the LDS deceased listings wer from. This means that there are some living relatives in Minnesota.

And, there are 2 phone directories for Norway below. Try them out, call a couple and ask 'do you speak english, I am Kvall in .
