its because there are not enough police to get these vermin off the streets. We need to hire about 5000 more cops and then we could really put a dent in this problem.

In addition to the above mentioned answers, many gangs in LA are international, for example 18th Street and MS-13. Even if the problem could be eradicated on a local level, there are plenty of other gang members, primarily in Central and South America, ready to assume the LA area operations.

Yes, gangs are a problem in some neighborhoods in LA. Not all, but you only hear about the problem areas.

It's a complex problem, with many causes. One of the main problems is the vicious cycle of a lack of a male authority figure. If a man goes to jail, gets killed, or just leaves his family to run with a gang, then there is nobody there to teach young boys how to be a man. So where do they learn? From the gangs, which causes the cycle to repeat itself.

The lure of "easy" money in the drug trade is also a problem. Why work for a low wage when you can get some "easy" money being a runner for a drug dealer. When you get older, you can be part of the gang, protecting your turf from other gangs who want some of the money your gang is making. Kids see older kids making easy money, showing lots of bling, and get drawn into it.

i think it's a combination of the breakdown of the family unit, low incomes and that the city is so damn big. that and the LAPD is ineffectual.

i think it's human nature for people to congregate in packs. when there is no strong family unit, maybe no father in the home, mom works, kids are left to run wild. they want to fit in with their peers, so they glom onto whoever looks cool and powerful.

I'd like to see these gangsters be put in the ultimate gang--the military. then they'd learn discipline and respect.

It is the family, education, law enforcement, lack of community, drugs, and money create a problem.

Its the parents. Its always the parents. If they had a good family life then they would amount to something. They weren't raised properly.
