he will in time. some kids take longer than others. my son (now 7) talked right on time, but my daughter (now 4) didn't say a word until about 2.5 years old. the problem with her was she didn't have to say anything to communicate with us cause we already knew what she wanted with her gestures and babbles. i started acting like i couldn't understand her after a while and she eventually got frustrated and started speaking to us! she's also the second child tho... and i've always heard of the middles children taking longer to talk.
hope i've helped a little. good luck.

Ever child has their own pace. But if you feel that there is some underlying problem discuss it with his pediatrician. See what they think. (Or have your child discuss it with your grand babys dr.) I have a son that is almost 5 here, and they wont start any type of speech therapy till a child is 3. Which untill he was almost that age they could also do hearing tests and other tests to determine what could be the problem. Some children have older siblings that talk for them, so they have no need to do it for themselves. But some dont & there is an issue there. Like with my son has always been tall, and grows constantly here. (grew 9" in 18 months) Come to find out, some areas of the body cant keep up. Well, his middle left ear, was completely blocked off. He couldnt hear in his left ear at all. And he had some hearing loss in his right ear from numerous ear infections. He had the surgeries to fix this, and he now hears fine. The speech therapy also helped him immensly! Which he still continues to this day at headstart. He is smart as a whip now and more productive then I could have imagined!!! He knows his phone #, address, can spell verbally his first & last name, and by sight knows many, many words (more then 20).
I wouldnt worry too much. If its addressed now with the childs physician, I'm sure that it will be monitored more closely, & discussed for his 3rd birthday. Then if necessary they will have the speech therapy in place for then.
Best of Luck to you & your family! Take Care

My daughter was 3 when she started talking words. Her speach therapist said kids can start the classes as early as 2 years old. You can get a free speach assesment threw the public school so one of the parents can call and set up a time to have your grandson evaluated if there is grave concern about the speach delay. Just remember alot of kids are late talkers.

It depends on your state/county. I have 3 kids and all three have needed speech therapy. One started at 18 months, one started at 3 years old, and one started in kindergarten. Start with the pediatrician for advise. If insurance doesn't cover it, it will be covered when he starts public school.
