Reno is about 12 miles from South Lake Tahoe, which is the closest town in California. San Francisco is 217 miles away, Los Angeles is 519 miles.

downtown Reno is about 12 miles from the state line...Some casinos and suburbs are much closer..

depends on where you want to go...I can drive to California and be there within 10 minutes but that's in the mountains, not in an actual city for sightseeing or things to do...
