Child Protective Services can tell you all the information. They have many websites. Do a search for "Child Protective Services" and your county. That will bring it up.

Some of them are:
Home study
Criminal check
Child abuse check (see if you are a child abuser)
Training (lots of this)

That's the majority of it, but the local CPS in your area can give you a complete list and will also be willing to speak with you regarding your interest.

There is a great need for foster parents. It's wonderful that you are thinking about this.

If fostering turns out to be too much, there is a thing called "respite". They are babysitters for foster families which are greatly needed also.

I'm troubled that "lucifer1" is asking this.

Do me a really big favor, become a Court-Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) before you make the jump. Doing that will help you make sure that you really want to do this. It's a HUGE commitment.

They are different from state to state, and even from county to county. Check with your local children's services (in phone book in the government pages) and ask. Also, check with private licensing agencies.
