Between the U.S. M1 steel helmet, the German steel helmet, the Soviet helmet, and the Japanese steel helmet?

Steel is steel is steel. The US Kevlar helmet both provides better protection and is lighter than all of those, allowing better range of movement (and therefore better combat effectiveness) for its wearer.

The best of these was the german steel helmet. There was a special version for the sentries, with an extra steel plate bolted to the front

Agree...steel is steel. They weren't meant as ballistic protection.

I've used both the original and new-style Kevlar. The new style is much more comfortable.

Direct hits on any of those mentioned was deadly.
They were primarily for shrapnel and falling debris.

None, they weren't really made to stop bullets, just falling debris from explosions probably.

None really, had good protection. They all, at best, would deflect a round. A square shot would , no doubt, kill you
