It is a great job that can be rewarding at times with things like putting a murderer or rapist away for life, saving a life, actually getting a "thank you".

Day to day is not very tough but it can wear on you if you let it. ALWAYS have friends outside of law enforcement and hobbies not police related so you can get away from it.

I went to a local community college as most officers do. The funny thing is that even those that get a 4 year degree usually end up at a local community college that last part of thier program getting the last part of training.

It was not too tough getting through the academy for me. It was very para-military which I was not used to but after enough push-ups you can adapt to anything.

I had CRAPPY grades in high school but it was becasue nothing could hold my interest. I took home lots of C's and D's. In college I took home all A's and a few B's. A LOT different when you are really into it.

We have two females in a 16 man department which is probably typical. As long as you don't let the guys get you down with jokes you will be just fine. The ability to bust balls and get your balls busted without taking your ball in going home will get you VERY far in this line of work. If you want to make it you need to major in law enforcement and minor in sarcasm and wit.

As far as do I like being a cop? I wish I was a firefighter. I could get paid to sleep 8 hours and only work 9 days a month. I love what I do. It is a lot of fun.

Q: How is it like being a police officer?
Is it tough day-to-day ?
A: Law enforcement is not only a profession, it's a lifestyle. When new officers come into the job, they often lose some friends who no longer want to socialize with a cop. Those aren't friends the cop needs anyway. On the other hand, the new officer has a whole new family.
LEO's face the worst of mankind's actions on a daily basis. We never get called when anyone's happy and in a good mood...it's always when they're drunk/high/fighting or in some other dire strait that we see them. Each officer comes into this job for a reason...however individual that reason may be. Some officers keep that ideal in the forefront and thats what keeps them going throughout their career. Some officers lose sight of that ideal...and they either drop out/burn out or get fired. So yes, it IS tough day-to-day, and if weren't for the internal support of other LEOs we would go crazy.

Q: Did you go to College or University?
A: I went to both a university and a community college. As a matter of fact, I am on the adjunct faculty as an instructor at eight community colleges in my state.

Q:Was it hard to get through police school?
A: For me, no. There were 20 recruits in my class in 1979. I was the only one that went past three years on the job.

Q: Were your marks high in highschool?
A: A's and B's...occasional C. I was a football jock and played first chair trumpet in the band.

Q: Do females get treated equally to males, are there many females working as cops?
A: I am not female, so obviously they may have a differing opinion. However from my perspective, the females are treated basically the same...and possibly even catered to in some cases. For example, we hired a female in '06 and the Field Training program typically lasts 14 weeks at my dept. She was deemed by her trainers to be a poor candidate. Whereas a male recruit with those scores at the end of the process would have been fired, she was allowed numerous extensions and ended up in the FTO program for 9mos instead og 14 weeks. She has been assigned now to a patrol team on her own, but she is not doing well at all and I don't expect her to stay much longer.
For the most part, the males officers only care about the job getting done...not the gender of the officer doing it.

Q: And lastly, Do you like being a cop?
A: Yes. It's been 28 years...I guess time flies when you're having fun. I've been on both the K9 and SRT Units for the past 19 yrs. The fact that you never know what you'll be doing 5 mins from now keeps you going. I've worked both patrol and on the vice/narc units. Love 'em both. Still on patrol.
Hooah.

Policing is a great profession. Every day is different and as a patrol officer you aren't stuck in a cubicle somewhere staring at the same four walls everday. You get to hear a million stories and get a chance to make a difference is someones life and help them solve problems. It can go from complete and utter boredom from one minute to shear terror the next. Is is tough? It is always challenging, just when you think you have heard it all, you end up with something completely different to try to figure out.
Best part=different everyday, co-workers
Worst part= shift work (night shift bites, working x-mas day as well), overtime (never knowing if you are going to be home on time).

I did have a university degree (not in anything remotely related to policing though) and it did give me an edge on being hired.

Police college was very challenging, you learn lots about the law and about yourself too. It wasn't academically hard, the subject matter is repeated often and is not difficult to learn. The practical stuff is a little bit harder but certainly do-able if you have the will.

I am a woman and other than the occasional "woman driver" comment (meant as a joke) I am treated almost exactly equally to males. In our service there is approximately 250 officers, about 40 are female. I get sent to the same calls as all other male officers and get all the same training and have the same expectations put on me.

I do like my job. It has parts that really suck, but overall I do not regret getting into policing. The people I work with are fantastic, the pay is good and so are the benefits and the pension plan. There a tons of possibilities to move up (promotion) and laterally (forensics, crime prevention, domestive violence, drugs, major cases, cyber crime, street crime, community policing).
