I saw this question after it had been answered and REALLY wanted to respond. I don't think there is a way to do that is there?
Anyhow, the answer that I wanted to get back to the asker is - the "tradition" of a diamond engagement ring is actually a "new" tradition - less than 100 years old. Thank the De Beers company - aka the diamond producers - for a brilliant marketing plan. They got all the famous people to start using diamonds for engagement rings - and now "everyone" does it.
Actually, the more traditional stone is Sapphire - which comes in a variety of shades. Blue, of course, is best known. But they come in a rainbow of colors.
Anyhow - I don't think there is any way for me to share this info except to ask a question, is there? I checked and the original asker doesn't allow contact, so I think this is the only way?

No, there is no way to answer a Y!A question after it's been closed to new answers. I do remember reading somewhere that the "diamond" ring tradition is not old, but caught on like wildfire in the last few generations. I personally come from a culture that has no tradition of giving an "engagement" ring at all, so I never quite saw what the big deal was about the whole diamond craze. I don't wear diamonds, so I chose a blue topaz ring to serve as my "engagement" ring (it is my favorite color stone).

I totally disagree with anyone who says it has to be a diamond. Original wedding rings were not diamond. It is the circular shape of ring that signifies the joining of two hearts and "eternal love". If you prefer a stone other than diamond (or no stone at all) go for it. I personally had an emerald and loved the ring, with many compliments.

I've heard of trash the dress, but not trash the ring. I thought it was traditional to wear your e-ring alongside your wedding ring? That's what I plan on doing. I would never want to trash the ring. My engagement ring is really special to me, and it can be worn everyday - 24/7, if you like. In the end, it's your decision, but I don't really understand why. Trashing the ring would give you far fewer pictures than trash the dress, and the pictures aren't nearly as easy to get... At least a wedding dress can be cleaned or repaired, but if you want that ring back, you're going to have to do some serious digging.

I've even seen other stones, not just diamonds and sapphires, used as engagement stones. It all depends on personal preference. Great info though!!!

Of course it has to be a diamond.. If the guy is too cheap to buy you a diamond ring, then i guess he's not willing to spend money on you.... So don't accept anything less then a diamond..

Absolutely not! I actually know a few couples that didn't do diamonds. One,for "ethical"reasons, the other just because she preferred a colored stone. It's YOUR choice!!Get what makes you happy.
