I am going to Thailand for the first time. I am trying to find the best place to stay. If I were to stay in Phuket town is it easy to get around the island? Any advise you can give me would be very helpful.

I think you would have more fun staying by the beach than in town as there are no beaches in town. Town is mainly living area for the locals and local businesses. Stay at Patong if you want to be conveniently close to the shopping and activities. Patong would be good for first-timers to get used to Phuket, but please don't think Phuket is all wild like Patong. Quieter beaches include Karon, Kata, Bangtao. But there are also smaller shops and restaurants at these beaches so if you prefer quiet, stay at Karon cos it's close to Patong and Phuket Town.

From Patong to Phuket is about 20 - 30 minutes, going over the hill. It is easy to find taxis or tuk-tuks (local transport but same price as taxi) in Phuket Town or Patong, and per way is about 300 - 400 Baht so bargain hard. Anyway, it doesn't really matter which beach you stay cos you'll most probably be taking day trips out of the island to nearby islands like Phi Phi Island, Phang Nga island, Racha island, Khai Island, Similan islands etc.

I hope you enjoy your stay in Phuket because I fell in love with it have been living here for 2 years now.

best advise don't stay in phuket town, nothing to do there, get a hotel in Patong. A taxi from phuket town to patong is about 30 to 45 minutes depending on traffic.

Hi there, yes I've been to Phuket end of March and strongly recommend you the fist Hotel I was, it's called Horizon Hotel, you will find two of them in Phuket, one in Patong and the other one in Karon beach. I was at Karon's as I prefer to have a more quiet place. If you book it when you are there (at least at the high season, they will charge you about BHT 6,000, which is much more than you are willing to pay, about USD 200 a day) but if you check it on the internet in advance you might get a much better rate (my friends and I paid about USD 90 but for a 3 persons room). Regarding Karon, in my opinion the beach is nicer than Patong, but if you want to go to nightclubs, you have to take a cab or tuktuk and they will try to charge you about BHT 400 or USD 13, which you can obviously negotiate. Phuket is super cool, have fun!

Agree with the above. Nothing to do in town. Find a place in Patong, even if not on the beach, it will be walking distance, and better than spending 30-45 minutes in a taxi.
