I am looking to buy a pre 2000 model year lexus coup. I have done some research, but i am having trouble figuring out wether to get a 6 cyl lexus sc300 or a 8 cyl lexus sc400. Does the larger engine car get ALOT worse gas mileage? Is maintenance on both cars the same? Anyone that owns either of these cars have any insight?
thanks.

A bigger engine does mean worse gas mileage, but not by a whole lot. Maybe 3-5 miles per gallon less, but you have so much more power. Maintenance is different because of the different engine, but the procedure for the maintenance is the same.

Lmao you guys need to do your research the 400 has barely more hp depending on year maybe 50 more at max i think im not sure now but its not a huge leap. The sc300 which is the 2jz motor not to be confused with the supras 2jzgte is easier to modify and surpass the v8 1uz motor but im not an expert go check out club lexus they have forums for this. It really just depends on what you want from the car. And remember the people that tell you "there is no replacement for displacement " are idiots

They're both solid cars, but I lean towards the sc300. Gas mileage are pretty close, but I find the inline 6 of the 2jz-ge engine on the sc300 easier to work on. The parts are also a tad cheaper for the sc300 (5 bucks for an oil filter from the toyota dealer instead of 7 on the sc400. Only need 6 of those iridium plugs too). However, if you plan on taking to the lexus dealer for maintenance, prepare to be screwed. I paid 80 bucks for an oil change once and have performed most of the maintenance myself since.

It may say lexus all over the outside, but all the parts inside says Toyota. If you don't feel comfortable working on it yourself, look for a good toyota mechanic that won't gouge you because of the "L" badge.

I would say that SC400 is your best bet. Your would have better resale value with a V8, if you can locate one. I have been looking for over a year for a 2000 Lexus SC400 with no luck. I did locate 2 but they both had been trashed. Let me know if you know of one?

Sc300 Vs Sc400

well its a tough decision to make,
if you take the 300 you will always think damn i should have taken the 400 for extra power, who cares about mileage neways.

and if a 400 is taken you will crib at the gas pump always thinking i am hardly pushing the car to limits a 300 would give better mileage.

i'd say checkout for deals whichever comes for a better price and a better condition prefer that than just a number at the tail of the car.

a car which can be trouble free will always keep you happy no matter the power or the mileage

For power I would go for the SC400, overall I would choose a SC300 for economy wise and they are good performance motors.

the only reason an sc300 would be better than an sc400.

supra engine+it can be manual trans. v6 will always be economical than an 8.
