Probably because they think they need to use that much energy, or because they don't know what to do to conserve energy. It could also be that they just don't think about it, instead they leave the room with all the lights on or don't turn off the T.V. when they stop watching it. It's the little things that build up.

As others have answered it doesn't waste electricity if you use it instead of an a/c or to help prevent lowering the temperature setting. I looked at how much electricity is consumed by ceiling fans and have the range of 10-50 watts per hour. If you use the fan for 8 hrs. @ 50 watts = 400 watts consumed. We pay for electricity in kilowatt-hours (kwhs). One kilowatt-hour is the equivalent of using 1,000 watts for one hour or using a 100-watt light bulb for 10 hours. 2 1/2 nights = 1 kwhr. My rates are approx 11 cents per kwhr. I'll let you figure out how much per month. That's the best answer I can give.

Because they don't know that they are wasting electricity! If only people were intelligent like you we wouldn't have to worry about this.

You can be a good housewife!

Hope this helps.

Interesting. we all do don't we. ultimately, we are quite spoiled. we lack a macro perspective, seeing only the visibility of our own lives vs. the world as a whole. maybe we should expand a bit and think much less of ourselves. maybe downshifting our lifestyle (actually have tried practicing this) and imagining that we live on limited income or simply trying out cold showers... why not? it will only make stronger and allow us to have a better understanding of those that live w/out anything

Because, to be blunt, people are stupid. A lot of people just can't be bothered, don't see how energy use adds up, and don't correlate that unnecessary light with their electricity bill.

I think people become used to something and become spoiled by it. we become so lazy when we can get whatever we want and don`t have to see any repercussions from it.
