You greatly over simplify things. If my 97 year old mother who has served God all her life is near death, what kindness would it be to ask God to keep her around another 20 years?
If my nephew with 3 young children is hit by a car, and lingering near death, how can I not pray that God would heal him and restore him for his sake and that of his family?
God answers the prayer of faith.

The Bible says there is a time to be born and a time to die

We do not have the mind of Christ.
He alone knows the day of our death, however, we should pray for the sick because we don't know whether it is that person's time to die or not. We should always pray according to God's will.

We are all mortal. You could say that these mortal bodies were designed to be temporary. We will all die eventually. We pray to keep somebody alive because we don’t want to loose them. We want to keep them with us. But to everything there is a season.

Instead of praying for God to keep somebody alive whose time has come, perhaps we should pray for help coping with death. God will give us comfort.

Because sometimes we pray wrong things. I try to pray God's will be done. I want to be a player in the midst of what God is up to. Like Jesus, many people was praying for Him...but it was His job to die for us. It is hard to surrender to God's wish.

You can't pray to keep them alive. You can pray to God to give them strength and to not let them suffer but you must pray that God's will be done.

We have God's promise that our prayers are not in vain, even if we don't receive specifically what we asked for Matt. 6:6
So prayer should not be seen as our means of getting God to do our will on earth, but rather as a means of getting God's will done on earth. God’s wisdom far exceeds our own.

Some people pray because they need to believe something greater than themself is out there. Without that belief people would be too afraid to live.
