Flying is both a science and an art. Flight is the product of the science of balancing and coordination of many forces and their inequilibriums. It is pure science that converts the pull of the stick to the DESIRED climb.

So if you know the science, it would help you to get the best out of your aircraft. Experience and instincts are at times as good enough, but these come with time and would vary from person to person. Science can help the pilot foresee what otherwise would come to know through bitter experience.

They have to understand the characteristics of lift, thrust, and moemtum... as well as speeds relative to the speed of sound (Mach) but being a pilot is not all that science intensive... it really doesnt require much more science than driving a car other than the fact that you need to know when you'll stall, what the weather is doing, and how fast your going.... it helps make you a better pilot but wont kill you if your not good at it...

Hmmm... let's check the short list...

Astronomy, Physics, Meteorology, Geography, Human Anatomy and Physiology...

But that's just the short list.

In addition to aerodynamics, meteorology is a major subject but, you definitely don't have to be a scientist to be a pilot.

ALOT, a plane will not fly without thrust, lift, drag, and gravity. and engine will not run without fire, gas, and air. these all deal with science. plus you need to know and understand what the rudder, elevator, slats, ailerons, spoiler, fuselage, espianage, and all of the other 1,000,000 things do.

In short, nothing really. Science is just another subject at school.
