he may need to be crate trained. for starters they are den creatures as you may already know. they love that security that the crate gives them. however if you are gonig to be gone all day, that might pose a problem. sounds like he needs to be atleasted blocked into a room where he will be adequatly entertained and fed till you get home and yet not get into trouble. just like with kids we have to baby proof the house you will have to do that with fido. when we leave the house we put our bichon in the boys rooms(my sons). he loves it there, and there is nothing he can get into that my sons haven't already messed with lol...infact our bichon,Potter IS one of the boys lol his bed is there, his water and food bowl and a window for him to look out and bark at the passerbys (he thinks he's so tough!). there is no trash or clothes for him to get into(my sons keep their clothes in a dresser in my closet). hope this helps! good luck!
p.s. sometimes we put in a dvd for him to watch! lol

Your dog maybe going through separation anxiety. How long do you leave your dog alone? If it is anything longer than a few hours, you might want to reconsider how long the dog is left alone. Crating the dog is an option. But if you are crating the dog longer than 5 hours, it may be not such a good idea to keep the dog couped up for so long. If the dog is getting into things while you are home, maybe close off the bathroom door. Trash cans can be temptations to dogs, but what is inside the trash cans can be dangerous. You don't want your dog to ingest something that can block its stomach or intestines or poison the dog! Another option is to close off the laundry room. The next time you take your dog to the vet for its check up, run the dog's behaviour by your vet and see what he or she thinks.

Crate training is a good solution as people have mentioned, but I'm curious that this is a change.
You said he used to be fine. Maybe you should look at what you may have changed around the same time he started this behavior.

You could do one of two things: 1) close the door or use baby gates, 2) crate train him

Keep a rolled up paper handy and give it a good swat when you catch it doing stuff it shouldent. It won't hurt it just scare it and get his attention. And it's not cruel either. Dogs are tough and can take it. Keep the b-room door closed.

im sorry but the only answer i have besides dog proofing the house every time before you leave is to crate him ...maybe its something you will only have to do for a while and then you can leave him loose again

we have simular problems with our two dogs. I found that every time you catch him picking up your dirty laundry is to tell them to drop it and when they do give lots of praise. Be consistant and paitent. there like kids. consistants and paitents is the key. After a while the'll stop. Do this and you'll see a change over time.

I agree with the fencing, but until then you will have trash in your yard. I suggest picking it up and dumping in the most inconvenient place for your neighbors, say their front door....Or garage/carport, you get the idea.
