Children should be able to play feely in their own natuaral way. Some will put away a toy before using the next- others will pull everything out and fuction that way. How they choose to play is also as important for understanding their minds as to what they play with. That said, children should not have so many toys that they don't have to use their imaginations to continue their play time, and also that they become spoilt and easily tire of a toy. In and ideal world they should have a child friendly zone where they know they can play without being nervous that they'll upset the grown ups. and then when playtime is over they should be taught to tidy away after themsellves. A child should not be able to take over the sitting room as they have to have respect for Mum an Dads space too.

Children from an early age need to learn to put toys a way when they are done playing yes I think that there should be a limit to how many toys are in a shared family environment especially if that room is used for entrataining guests but I also get discouraged when I walk into someones house who has kids and you dont see a single toy in sight kids let the kids play it doesn't need to be a crazy mess

I came from a very large family and so my Mom had rules about toys.
1. No toys in the adult space
2. Only 2 toys out at a time per child - one for each hand
3. Each toy has a place in the toy room - it has to be there before bedtime.
4. If it is broken throw it out.
5. On the day before your birthday, donate your 'I'm too old for this toy' to some charity

Reading between the lines, it seems you don't like any mess or clutter, especially from kids. Yes, they need toys to help with their development. Most parents have storage boxes in the lounge, with most loved toys in. Obviously they're going to get scattered during play, but you can teach kids how to tidy them away. I was in my neighbor's house one time when the child health care worker called. My neighbor apologized for the toys on the floor. The h.c worker replied "Never apologies for that. I'd be worried if toys weren't lying around and the house was too tidy."

I try and stick to the rule - once you have finished with a toy put it away before getting another one. Never works. My girls are 4 and 2. I give up until one of them falls over a toy, then I ask them to put some away. As long as your house is clean and your children are happy - who cares how many toys are lying about?

This is a biased opinion being that i have two toddlers, i do agree with most toys in the bedroom and some toys in the living area. Kids do need their own space but more they need the company of others (small ones anyways) to feel safe and secure they like to look around and see thoose that make them feel safe.
I like big and noisy toys to stay in the bedroom and stuff we can do together like books and coloring stuff to stay where i can see them.

I used to rotate my childrens' toys, so that there weren't too many at any one time. This meant that my sitting room wasn't always cluttered with too many toys, and at the next 'rotation' toys appeared fresh again. At the end of the day, I collected all the toys into a big wicker basket, closed the lid, and hey presto, uncluttered floor, wicker basket I could use as a coffee table.

Keep their toys in their room or a play room and allow them to bring out a toy to the living room to play with. When they finish with each toy, return it to the play room and get another to play with. The living/family room is for everyone to enjoy and it is hard to enjoy being in a room with so many toys on the floor you can't walk safely. It will also begin to teach them to clean up after themselves as they go through the day.

My little girls toys are mostly in her bedroom, she only brings one toy down at a time. The front room is not just for her it is for adults too so toys are kept out of the way.

All my childrens toys are in there bedrooms but slowly throughout the day they make it into the living room
I make them put it all back before bed time, kids will be kids and they want to be in the room where all the activity is, and remember back to when you were young, I bet it was better making the mess than clearing it up
