A few weeks ago, some white solid particles showed up in my throat. I can't swallow them or dislodge them by gargling or gagging.

Upon closer inspection, I noticed some "new?" holes in my throat that I've never seen before. Some of the white solids seem stuck in these holes. Since they appeared, my breath has been awful and my voice has become scratchy.

I went to my college clinic, and the nurse couldn't tell me what it was or how to cure it. Is anyone familiar with something like this? What could the white stuff be? And are there supposed to be holes in my throat?

Found that these are "tonsilloliths" or "tonsil stones" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tonsilloliths). It appears to be common.

I have had white patches caused by infections and I have heard about them being caused by something called thrush, but that's usually in infants. I think you have a sore throat and need antibiotics, see a doctor not just a nurse for diagnosis and ask for a strep check too.
