My wife and I cruise about 2-3 times a year - we have sailed on every major cruise line. We did the exact same cruise that "tbugs" did on the Mercury for 10-nights, and couldn't disagree with him more.
The Mercury is a beautiful, graceful, and elegantly appointed ship. She is one of Celebrity's "Century Class" of ships, which include the Century, Mercury and Galaxy. We've cruised on each one of these ships (and twice on the Century), and one is as nice as the others.
It's unfortunate that "tbugs" had such a poor cruise experience, but the Norvirus and other virus-like illnesses are just something that you can't blame the ship for.
If you'll step back and take an overall look at Celebrity Cruise Line, you notice that they've won some pretty impressive awards. We just came off the Celebrity Constellation last week, from a 12-day Caribbean cruise, so I happen to have some info right here;
- they won 6 of the top 10 positions in the Best Large Ship category
- won highest rated Premium Cruise Line
- took top 3 spots for Best Crew/Service
- won all 4 Best Food/Dining rankings
- top spot Best Cabins
You don't get to this position by offering a less than first-class product. I'm confident that once you experience Celebrity, you'll be spoiled. Other cruise lines just don't match-up to the levels of service, attention to detail, quality of food and overall cruise experience.
Enjoy your cruise - Bon voyage!

Is the Mercury a good ship? In one word, "NO".
I was on the Mercury last spring cruising from San Diego along the Mexican Riveria.
First of all, the Mercury just does not feel luxurious like the rest of the Celebrity liners. The staff is not as attentive.
The dreaded Norovirus hit the Mercury on the cruise and it was pure Hell. About 300 passengers and crew caught it. The ship's activities were cut down to a minimum. The crew constantly sprayed all walls, doors, tabletops, elevators, and stair railings with bleach. The stench of bleach was everywhere. Clothing was ruined by the bleach. If a person did report to the Infirmary, they were treated free but also confined to their cabin for 72 hours. You were told if you went outside the cabin, you would be put off the ship. Security checks were made every 30 minutes.
That happened on 3 consecutive cruises last spring and 2 in the early summer when the Mercury sailed to Alaska. The Mercury is a sick ship and should be drydocked and decontaminated before sailing again.
Choose another ship for your trip.
Celebrity did some good by giving a partial refund on the cruise but it was still the cruise from Hell. I would never go on the Mercury again.
I would like to ask Travel Guy if he has ever been on a ship at the time the Norovirus has hit. I do blame Celebrity for allowing the Mercury to sail 3 times to the Mexican Riveria without being taken out of service while the Norovirus was cleaned. It also happened 2 times in a row on the Alaska cruise right after the Mexican Riveria.
I have sailed on Celebrity since that time and had no trouble. I will continue on that cruiseline but never again on the Mercury.

Its a really really nice ship and if you go to Celebrity's home page you can take a virtual tour of the ship and if you go to Cruise Critic you can review the ship and the cruise and some are bad but you have to ignore hte bad reports as alot of them are complaints about things that the cruise line and ship had no control over like being quarantined because your sick, the ship can do anything about that and the cruise line cant so I would just look into it.

I thought she was beautiful when I sailed on her. Good food, service, & nice size cabins....larger than Royal Caribbean or Princess. Fun Martini bar & good selections in the Champagne bar. Both are outide of the dining room - it's 2-story. Nice bathrooms with good size showers. That seem to be unusual for alot of the cruiselines.

All Celebrity ship are nice --however Celebrity is not a Spring Break party crowd. Celebrity is more upscale and laid back.
