I am thinking of adding new countertops in my kitchen,?

I really like Granite Countertops but they are expensive. A friend was telling me she read somewhere about countertops that could be covered with a material that looked like Granite, and was alot cheaper. Does anyone know the name of this kind of covering?

well you can do granite tile, non-custom granite (slab that is always in stock, though few options "lookswise") or there is a granite that is not as thick as a slab, that fits over a wood frame. that's probably what our friend is talking about.

The reason that granite is so expensive is because it adds so much value to your home. I wouldn't pay for something like what you are mentioning, I have never seen anything like that and have been working in the floor covering remodel for over two years. That doesn't mean it does not exists but if it is not sold alot there is a good reason. Your friend may be mentioning a product called "Corion" which does have a granite look but it is not cheaper, in fact it's more expensive.

My advice stick with granite you will be glad you did in the future when it comes time to sell your house.

Two years ago I renovated our kitchen and wanted granite or something high quality in the kitchen, but because I was investing in so much else I cut corners and did Formica tops.

It looks ok, but man made stone finish or a stone top would have been so much richer.

Try hard to do a higher quality in your kitchen it will be well worth it, even if you have to make payments to have it.

Your friend is correct. There is a product called Rocksolid Granit
and they put it over the top of the old countertop.
