It won't heal on its own, so i would suggest going to a doctor if you can't stand the pain. You should also make sure you keep it clean. Here's some things you can do at home for it though. Soak your foot in water four times a day. You don't need to add any soap or anything else in it. Wash the foot (including the infected area) twice a day with soap and water. Do not wear any tight fitting shoes. Try to lift up the corner of the nail that is digging into the skin and put a small piece of cotton or gauze under it. If you see no improvement within three days, you should call your doctor.

You have two options. You could cut the nail yourself or go to the doctor. It is a simple procedure you need to find the edge where the nail is digging into your toe and cut it out. It may be a bit painful however the relief is immediate. A doctor does the same thing however in a sterile environment and a local anesthetic. If you decide to do it yourself make sure you keep it clean and have some good clippers or toenail scissors. If it is too red and puffy it may be infected. Your choice.

go to the doctor and get that out of there ASAP. I had one and I kept hoping it would heal on its own and it kept getting worse and worse. It started to look all like burnt flesh mixed with gangreen (sp?) or something. If you touched it, it would hurt like hell. I couldn't walk straight or anything.

Go to the doctor. The procedure is simple and painless while he/she is doing it. Later on its just pressure. Trust me. Do it.
