Peter Luger Steakhouse if you can afford it (and you must pay cash) and you can take the attitude.

Try Shelly's Steakhouse in Midtown, just a few blocks from Central Park.
With a bright Red Neon Light exterior, the interior is dim and cool. It is the exact opposite of the facade that screams for attention. Inside, Shelly's is a calm but not overly quiet place. The atmosphere is sociable but not exhibitionist. The service is sincere and although posh, not snobby.
All in all, I think the place was a fun experience but overpriced. For two people a few beers, an appetizers of good raw oysters, a steak entree and a seafood entree, it will set you back $100-$120. I had only one gripe about this place: it was a steakhouse yet they did not offer steak sauce or horse radish! That kind of bummed me out.
Other than that, the quality was good and the service reliable. Although I'm not going to give Shelly's stellar ratings, I will tell you that I'd go there again and do recommend you check it out if you are looking for a satisfying dining experience and you're hovering about lower Central Park and decide to grab dinner.
Although I personally think the restaurant is overpriced, for a restaurant in Manhattan, it's about average.

I never liked filet mignon - I'd much rather have a t-bone, or a porterhouse. I prefer the taste of skirt steak to filet mignon. I ordered the porterhouse at Mark Joseph's, but I tasted my friend's filet - the taste was too delicate for my liking - I want to taste the beef, but she thought it was great. The Monkey Bar has good reasonably priced steaks.

Since you're not a tourist, and I'm sure Tad's (ugh) is not high on your list, you must go to Ben Benson's. A friend of mine has the filet every time. I go for the lamb chops and rib eye, but the filet is fantastic. Plus the hash browns or mashed potatoes are out of this world! I heard a rumor that their veggies are good too, but I never have room.
Benson's is not inexpensive, but the service and food is worth it and they take plastic.
Enjoy your dinner!

My first place would be Tavern on the Green, but I heard Tads Steak house is good too. Tads Steak house is not as Ritzy as Tavern on the Green, check out Zagats and see what they say.

I'm a Ruth's Chris fan - I love the filet there. The ribeye is great too - as is the strip... Great service.

Delfrisco's!!! I love ribe eyes as well and this place does it to perfection. I also like the setting. 2 levels with 2 bars upstairs and downstairs. My husband orders the porterhouse, but on occasion I have ordered the filet. Very good, but I love my rib eye!
Have fun!
