I have two 9 month old greater swiss mountain dogs, who would be great at pulling heavy weights and/or running thru agility courses, but I can't seem to get started. I live in the Providence, RI area.

"working" is used as a play on the fact my dog is a "working class" breed and yes, work, means "work" even though it may be fun for the dog.

For breeds that size you should for major jumping or agility training until they are 18 months old to prevent damage to the bones/joints. They should alos be at their full growth for weight pulling, though you could begin to teach the basics now. I suggest you try Rally and/or obedience first.
Check out infodog.com for dogs events in your state. That is a good way to see what the "doggie crowd" is doing and find training clubs.

You can just start with general training. Then build jumps and run beside your dog while they jump the jumps. After a while ask them to stay at one end of the lineup of jumps and call them. They should jump the jumps. I am involved in agility classes and live in the Santa Teresa New Mexico area.

Try your local humane society, kennel club, veterinarian, or one of the large pet stores in the vicinity--they should have information about classes you could join.

Your best bet is to contact your local chapter of the Kennel Club. They have basic obedience training, and often have courses or connections for agility classes as well.

Find a club in your area that is just for the Mountain dogs. I belong to a Golden retriever club and they have wonderful things for Golden's to do. All their activities are geared towards your dog and what they can do.
