yes, you can, I'd recommend margerine over butter...

if you use oil, you will lose the flakiness, they'll be more like hockey pucks.

The other person was right about oil, do not use it. But, to use margarine is worse as it has hydrogenated oils. You could use Smart Balance as it is like margarine with no hydrogenated oils.

As for the amounts I believe you can use the same, but maybe less. The Butter shortening has a recipe ratio, but I cannot remember it.

Look on Foodtv.com under Alton Brown and find a biscuit recipe or just search for biscuits.

Remember to chill your butter a little as you work it into your biscuits with your fingers. This bonding is what will make your biscuits flaky. It should look like corn meal or little peas when done right (before you work in wet ingredients.

if you lookon the back of a crisco package if will give you the converson from shorting to butter it is 1 cup crisco + 6 teaspoons water = 1 cup butter or margarine

if you look in cookbook it has a buttermilk biscuits that is good and uses butter
