Someone just told me they have just been choked. They told me they have a persistent cough and that their neck and throat hurts..

I have not researched this matter. Would you think they need to go to the doctor, or is that the symptoms of being choked?

This is serious.

Thank You!!

Been chocked by someone?

I wouldn't go to the doctor just yet. No HUGE trauma has occured, other than a slight loss of oxygen.

USUALLY if those are the only symtpoms (coughing, sore throat, etc) nothing MAJOR has taken place. Have this person watch his/her symtpoms for a few hours/days and see if it improves.

This isn't an ER visit, but I would watch it just in case.

Go to the emergency room at your local hospital immediately. There are any number of things that could have happened that could cause swelling around the airway when chocked. If it continues it could close off the airway from the inflamation. The police will need to be notified by the ER staff or yourself on arrival. Definately do not play around waiting to see if it gets better.

Yes that happens when you get choked and you should call the police on whoever choked that person and go to a doctor to see if anything is damaged.

UK

If there is any sign of breathing difficulty, take the patient directly to hospital.
If the choking was committed by someone maliciously, call the Police first and then an ambulance.

if the windpipe is collapsed it could be very serious. but it doesn't seem that it is. if it persists it would be advisable to see a doctor. most often it would just take a day or two to heal depending on the severity of the matter.
