Baldness will occur anytime the rate hair falls out is faster than hair regrows. Hormones can be a major factor, and particularly a hormone related to testosterone -- DHT. Male pattern baldness is basically a sensitivity to DHT. Some baldness treatments like Proscar try to block DHT, but there are side effects because this is a hormone that probably serves some useful purpose in guys.

It has also been found that restricting blood flow to the hair follicles helps keep hair. That is what topical applications like Rogaine do. However, that only helps for mild balding, and many people develop skin sensivity to the chemicals.

Unfortunately, there is not yet a good way to cure/preven male pattern baldness. You can be sure that the pharmaceutical companies are working hard on it though, because it would be even a bigger money maker than Viagra.

The genes you inherit. It's not something you did wrong or can prevent. Some severe illnesses can cause short term hair loss that is reversible once the illness is no longer a problem.

Rogaine has been proven by clinical trials and years of subsequent use to cause growth of new hair (It was once available only through prescription, but now you can by it over the counter), but you have to continue it's use forever. Any of those weird things you see on TV or in magazines don't work. Hair transplants can help but are very expensive and, if not done by a skilled plastic surgeon, can look artificial and strange.

The worst possible thing for baldness is the comb over. Talk about ridiculous! I think men who are balding on top look best when they trim the hair they do have short all around. Wearing a cap or hat is sad because you have to take it off some time. Just hold your head high and stop worrying about it. Nobody else does, especially if that man has character, personality and self-confidence.

It is a gene carried by the female, so if you wanna know what your chances are of ebing bald, check out your mothers brothers, if they are bald chances are you will be too, if they are not, then you are likely to keep your hair.

In many men, it is inherited. And, surprise, through the mother. I was told by an M.D. (sent there under duress when my mother saw me going bald in college) that a man can look at his mother's brothers and see himself at the same age. It is called "male pattern baldness". And, if you have got it, learn to love it. Sean Connery doesn't have any problem attracting women.

Baldness is not usually caused by a disease, but is related to aging, heredity, and testosterone.
