Believe me you can rename a dog at any age. With puppies they adapt to a new name extremely easy
Even a 10 year old dog can be renamed, but easiest if a tactic is used lets say the dog was named Alfred but you wanted to rename it Mikey
So at first you put both names together when calling the dog
Here Alfred Mikey!!! after a week drop the first sylable "Al"
By now the dog is getting used to hearing Mikey so just use "fred Mikey" a couple days and after use Mikey and the dog should by then be responding. You can do this with a puppy but really not necessary

I think it is okay. Alot of animals get renamed, even after years. With all the animal cruelty going on and the animal shelter taking these animals from there owners and adopting them out, most of the time they get renamed. Older animals I think might find it a bit confusing for a short time but they adjust. With your puppy still being young, I don't think it would matter.

It is not likely the puppy even knows its name yet. I adopted a puppy and changed her name when I got her home. She was from a shelter and at 8 weeks had no clue what her name was.

It's not a problem at all changing the name, especially when they are young and open to change. Look how many people get a dog from the shelter that was lost. No one knows that dog's name, yet they go to new homes, get a new name and do fine.

Puppy is just 8 weeks old..change the name go ahead..never use the disliked name again.Use his new name all the time.Reward him for coming to his new name..it wont take long.I got a two year old rescue dog...and just hated his name...it only took about two weeks to get him changed.I thought that was pretty good.

Of course you can. The dog won't know. We've got our dogs from a shelter and of them was 3 years old. We didn't like the name that the people at the shelter had given her, so we changed it. She adapted to the new name just fine.

Of course, I got a 2 yr old black lab, she didnt have on a collar and the spca named her "Jitterbug" (which I understand why when we got her home) but we renamed her Dora. She understands that thats her name and listens and comes when we call her.. Best SPCA dog i have ever seen by the way! : )

If the puppy is only 8 weeks old, it probably wont even know its name or understand it. i think it would be ok the change it but maybe try and keep it similar? that should help.

It will be fine. I changed my dog's name when he was around 6 months old, and call him by a ton of nicknames. Also of note, animals respond best to names that end in "e" sounds, like my dog, Loki.

Firstly congratulations on your adoption! :) It is OK to change the dog's name. The dog is young and may not associate to its given name yet. Best to make the name change now! :) Have fun with your new dog.
