can anyone tell me what さレさレ is in english.
i can only read in romaji so i can't read these katakana (?) characters.

This looks like a strange combination of hiragana 'sa' - the first character, and katakana 're' - the second character. As such is doesn't make sense in Japanese, as you can't combine katakana & hiragana in the same word. One possible explanation is that as Japanese doesn't use spaces between words, maybe it's the last part of one word, ending with the hiragana 'sa', and the beginning of the next katakana word starting with 're'. Or the katakana 're' should be a hiragana 'shi' which looks quite similar.... the hiragana shi has a more curved hook on the bottom of the downstroke.
p.s. It is NOT 'sarusaru' as suggested by someone previously ... 'ru' is a very different character!

Your friend wrote "sare sare" with the "sa" in hiragana and the "re" in katakana. (This, it is to be noted, is not done in Japanese.)
If she wanted to write "monkey monkey" it should have been "saru saru", written all in hiragana, like this: ãããã.
