Not sure if it smells as I have never burned it. We were not around when settlers had to burn it so how would we know if God gave some poor freezing settler the idea to burn it. Whatever, apparently, it saved a lot of people from freezing to death.

Dung was used to fuel fires way before settlers came to this country.
The settlers read the bible all the time.
Ezek 4:12 "And you shall eat it as a barley cake, having baked it in their sight over human dung."
Ezek 4:15 Then He said to me, "See, I shall give you cow's dung in place of human dung over which you will prepare your bread."
This book was written about 600 years BC.
