Love handles can be tricky to get rid of. Unfortunately, there is no such thing as targeted weight loss (trying to lose weight in only specific areas.) So the thing to do is to simply start losing weight until you see a difference. This involves 1) proper nutrition and 2) exercise.

First, exercise:

There are a couple of approaches you can use, but the most effective method that I have seen is called High Intensity Interval Training or HIIT.

Unfortunately, HIIT is not pleasant (it is high intensity after all) but it will shed the pounds quicker than traditional cardio with about half the time devoted to it. If you are older or have not exercised in quite some time, then I suggest traditional cardio on a bike, elliptical or start jogging.

Anyway, you can do HIIT with just about any activity where you can devote maximum effort (biking, jogging, swimming, etc). This is important because your body will need variation to keep shedding pounds. After a couple of weeks of a HIIT running program you may reach a plateau in your fitness, unable to get any farther despite more effort. This is because your body has pretty much grown used to the exercise. If you hit that point, it is time to mix it up and try a new exercise like biking.

You should only devote 2-3 days a week if you are going to be doing HIIT, it is that demanding and your body needs rest intervals to recover.

There is HITT information at:

Along with the cardio, there is weight training. A lot of women avoid weight training because they think it will bulk them up. This is not the case if you train to sculpt, rather than increase muscle size.

To bulk up, men typically lift heavy, heavy amounts of weight as compared to their strength. This is done to actually damage their muscles and force them to heal and grow, this is adaption at its best. The muscle knows it was too weak for the work, so it heals and grows to handle the work better the next time.

To avoid this bulking effect, many women use lighter weights to sculpt their bodies and tone up. This is the approach to use. Light weight, high repetitions. You will find that light weight training not only sculpts your body, it will also increase your metabolism and keep you leaner with less effort than when you first start training.

Doing side lunges with two dumb bells will sculpt your inner thighs. But pretty much any lunge, squat, or dead lift will target your thighs and hamstrings.

Here is a link to side lunges:

Combing cardio like HIIT with some concentrated weight training will give you that hourglass shape in under a year.

Second, nutrition:

Of course, the second part to the equation: calorie intake. You need to start consuming fewer calories each day, based on your daily caloric needs. We all know that we gain weight when we intake more calories than we burn, so to lose weight you need to burn more calories than your intake. So if you do HIIT for 15 minutes and then eat a double bacon cheeseburger, you're probably not going to get the results you desire.

Nutrition is key. The milkshake lunches are not the solution, but healthy eating is. Most of your calories need to be coming from high protein lean meats (turkey, fish, chicken breast, lean beef) and vegetables with significant health benefits (brocoli, beans).

So basically you need to consume fewer calories, and the calories that you do consume need to be coming from sources other than fat and sugar.

There is a daily calorie calculator at:

Well, I hope this helps. Remember, it only takes 2 weeks for something to become a habit. So force yourself through the first couple of weeks. Eventually, what you thought were sacrifices (fast food, Grey's Anatomy t.v. marathons) will become distractions to your goal, and eventually those distractions will become obsolete.

Hope this helps.

Remember to check with your doctor prior to commencing any exercise program which might increase the risk of heart problems.

i too have the type of body you are describing and since i was thin before i had my daughter i've had to change my way of eating and living.
what i do now is 2-4 times a week if not more depending on your schedule i half walk half jog for about 4 blocks or 2 miles.
i drink 8-10 glasses of water a day (you'll pee a lot).
i've started eating more veggies and fruits (fresh is best or salad).
and i now do squats with my 20 pound daughter (in other words dumbells you choose the wieght that is comfortable).
i do sit-ups and crunches alternating between the 2 about 100 reps all together (start small and work your way up).
and last but not least i've been walking about an hour all together in a day.
i've been doing all that for about a week and already my thighs are getting that muscled look, my tummy is getting smaller and overall i feel a lot better.
good luck and have fun.

i work out regularly because i'm in training to get ready for bootcamp for the Marines so i know alot of stuff on this subject from the recruiters. to get rid of unwanted fat its not just dieting that you need its excercise too. Try bicicles or crunches/sit ups, i've noticed running really helps too and that burns alot of unwanted fat areas away but you have to do it more than 20 minutes a day, after the 20 minute mark the glucose used in the muscles is used up and then it starts to burn body fat which is the stuff u wanna lose! so try it and dont give up after a week, keep a chart, take a picture of yourself showing off what you want to lose and keep it somewhere u can see it everyday to keep u motivated! take it slow at first and DONT make unreal goals like i wanna lose 5 lbs in a week because although some people can do it it isnt healthy, 1-3 lbs lost a week is healthy, try to diet dont eat butters, oils, and stuff like that, try to eat complex carbs like potatoes and bread (not with butter or in french fry form) and FIBER!!!! yes fiber eat it regularly like mini wheats. fiber and complex carbs are the hardest to break down in the body so it will burn more calories while you rest, and after working out eat protien to rebuild muscles (not alot of food though) try to cut what you eat, that means dont eat as much i hope this helps

you could try Pilates..... A while back I went to Walmart and bought MTV Pilates dvd and an exercise mat.... at first it was hard cause it works mostly your core muscles (abs) but it works everywhere really and it got easier and even fun....

That would be my suggestion along with drinking a lot of water and eatting healthy foods.

Go to a track, and walk. I know that my sound like the pad answer, but I knew a lady that did that, she started out slow, then gradually got to running, then in no time, she was looking good.
