Trick 1: Get a trim. Hair that's dry, full of split ends, or otherwise damaged knots up more easily than healthy hair, which tends to be more slippery. Try a half- to quarter-inch trim every six weeks to keep hair its healthiest.
Trick 2: Condition. Use a moisturizing conditioner every time you shower. Conditioners leave a slight film on the hair, making strands smooth and flexible -- and less prone to knot. If knots are continual problem, look for a leave-in formula, like Aveda Elixir Leave-On Conditioner ($10.99), or formula especially made for getting our knots, like Frederic Fekkai's Instant Detangler ($18.50).
Trick 3: Treat existing knots carefully. If you've got a really bad snarl, put down your comb, which will probably only tear the knot out of your hair. Instead, wet hair, and apply a generous amount of conditioner to the knot. Gently use your fingers to separate the knotted hair, working in more conditioner as needed so strands literally slip out of the knot.
Trick 4: Use a natural bristle brush. If you don't have time to work knots out with your fingers in the shower, opt for a brush with natural bristles. Brushes with synthetic bristles can tear and break hair, exacerbating a knotting problem. Natural brushes, on the other hand, are gentle on hair strands, smoothing them and gently working out knots.
Trick 5: Watch everyday assaults. A turtleneck that catches the back of your hair in its neckline, a bag that traps hair under its straps when you sling it over your shoulder, and a heavy reliance on ponytail holders can all increase the number of knots you see. If you put your hair up frequently, switch to elastics with no metal parts (Scunci No Damage Hair Elastics, $2.99, are a good bet). In general, treat hair as gently as you can.

conditioner a wide tooth Comb (not a brush) and patience.
Remember start from the bottom of your hair and work your way up. Be gentle and take your time to prevent breakage.
To prevent tangles get your hair cut on a regular basis and use a leave in conditioner.

Make sure you are using moisturizing shampoo AND conditioner. Conditioner is a must for tangly hair. You can also try many available hair de-tanglers. Although usually marketed for kids, they work well on anybody. If that doesn't work, consider a reeaallly short haircut. Good luck!
