A leader must have a natural ability to see what needs to be done, when it needs to be done, and be able to deligate who needs to it. They also must always be thinking ahead, seeing the big picture. For example Ulysses on the island of the lotus flowers. He came to realise what was happening. He saw what needed to be done. He also realised that he was the only one who could do it! He sacrificed his eyelids and got the job done. (sacrifice is often a difficult but very nessasary decition for a leader to make).

Am I writing your essay? Ok then, that being cleared up:
Leadership is taking up responsibility even if it's not forced on you, being noble and standing up for a good cause and possibly making great sacrifice in order to achieve that noble (and possibly selfless) aim.
Examples from Ulysses...can't help you there (it's been a while since I've taken U.S. Hist...)
Good luck!

Leadership is taking action when all others are stagnant. It is the will to get something done, using the best options for the ideal solution. It is knowing when to delegate responsibilities, because no one can do everything. It is the ability to stand up against enormously bad odds, and persevere intil a goal is met.
